THE MOVE has been a success! After a few trials, Dr Kim’s clients have managed to find the new premises (at 131 Victoria Avenue Chatswood) and found there is more parking, easier access and much quieter. Their cats concur! Please remember to phone 9417 6613 if you need to see or speak to Dr Kim. It helps get you the right service quicker!  Still expert veterinary medical, surgical and behavioural care for your cat, as well as the new grooming service offered for ANY CAT not just matted cats!

THE ORIGINAL PREMISES (at 329 Penshurst St Willoughby) is still fully functional for boarding and retail premises. Chatswood Cat Central is the only specialist cat shop in Sydney.  Nutritional advice, flea control, litter tray etiquette and basic behavioural advice is customised to your cat’s requirements. And, of course, we still home out those adorable kittens and WYSIWYG cats (those adults needing a second try at finding just the right human to take them in). Phone 9417 6613  and see what Inge, Carly and John can do for your cat!

Sadly, Mona, the cat on Dr Kim’s logo, has passed away. Mona was Dr Kim and husband John’s own puurrrsonal cat. Small in body, huge in spirit, happier times remembered. Thank you for all the kind thoughts offered on her passing.

New Kitty Day Spa Grooming Service:  Jo Gray,  an award-winning cat (and dog) groomer - originally trained by Dr Kim, many years ago - has agreed to groom cats here once a month (more if demand requires).  Do you have too much fluff around the house and no time to comb your cat? Jo can defluff, wash and blow dry most cats without sedation. Especially if they are brought in regularly so she can help them BEFORE their coat gets matted and painful. If your cat regularly gets knots and becomes matted, she may need sedation and and clipping to get the situation under control. Regular maintenance is then possible. Dr Kim says ‘Jo is the only person I’ve seen with such great control of cats!’  It means your cat is more likely to tolerate the grooming she needs - and the cats even begin to enjoy it once they know how much better they feel! Phone 9417 6613 to book your cat in - the grooms are done on Mondays at 131 Victoria Avenue, so Dr Kim can supervise and use sedation or pain relief (especially for arthritic cats) if needed.

New Vaccination Service: No appointment required - your cat can be weighed, checked for fleas and vaccinated by our Feline Nurses at Chatswood Cat Central. Vaccination Certificate supplied.  If your cat is then staying and boarding, you can have her health checked (free) by Dr Kim.  If your cat only needs a vaccination for boarding, then take advantage of this new service.  Dr Kim has supervised and certified the Feline Nurses, and the vaccine itself is safe and effective.  Safe, convenient and a real time-saver, especially for those last minute boarding bookings!

Christmas Boarding: BOOK NOW! 9417 6613 It gets harder closer to the Silly Season! Don’t miss out.

The Oldies but Goldies Edition
More cats are living longer because their owners are more attentive to their basic health and behaviour requirements.  Dr Kim is regularly helping owners to  manage their venerable feline friends age gracefully into their ‘teen’ years. A cat who has lived 13 calendar years is metabolically the same as a 70 year old person! By 19, a cat equates to a human over 90 years old!  And as with humans, some get there on their own, but more are making the longer journey with the help of medications, lifestyle improvements and good nutrition.

The BIG THREE issues for Senior cats are Arthritis, Dental Health and Kidney Function. We used to think that cats did not get Arthritis, and that slowing down was just a function of growing old.  Now we know that 90% of cats over the age of 10 years have arthritis and we all appreciate that chronic pain is debilitating.  The good news is that there are now some great ways to alleviate that pain, and your oldie will even start playing again!  Dr Barry offers Acupuncture. It is actually called Aquapuncture because under sedation / pain relief, he injects Vitamin B12 into the Acupuncture Points. It means your cat only has one visit, is pretty immediately free of pain, and the results usually last 1 to 2 years!  80%  of the cats he has treated have done extremely well. In addition, there are Deer Velvet, Green Lip Mussel supplements, safe pain relieving drugs, and a course of injections (Cartrophen - originally developed for racehorses ! but cats benefit as well).
Dental deterioration is the next chronic problem our feline friends have - basically because they don’t brush their teeth, fluoride does not help them, and only catching and eating mice is preventative (truly - ask Dr Kim next time). Because those germs in the mouth affect a cat’s whole body, it puts pressure on the immune system and the kidneys in particular, plus bad teeth are sore.  Major dental work involves removing those teeth before the root abscesses cause bigger problems.  Removing all the back teeth (the canines or long front teeth remain for face shape and defence) results in longer kidney life, reduced pain and much better breath! Human periodontists have proved that taking out all the teeth of homeless people - whose dental hygiene is probably about the same as cats’ - results in a lot fewer trips to hospital, and much better heart health (the human weak point).  Cats are just as keen to stay away from hospital, and a ‘caudal clearance’ helps them to do that.
Kidneys are a cat’s weak point. 50% of cats die of kidney failure, and the other half from cancer (with a few from heart problems).  Now that there is so much more we can do to help keep feline kidneys functioning for longer, the cats just keep on going!  Dr Kim likes to regularly check kidney function with urine tests and blood pressure measurements (yes, Dr Kim measures BP with paediatric cuffs and a special doppler machine!). The procedures are painless - the cats think it is strange but they rarely object. They must know it is for their own good!  Managing blood pressure with drugs, and changing the diet to help the kidneys function better, has resulted in many venerable souls living a very high quality of life for many extra years!

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ANNUAL KIDNEY AND DENTAL HEALTH WEEK OFFER - your feline friend wants to be with you as long as possible! Phone 9417 6613 NOW and book your cat in.
